(The
Activation of Tinker Air Force Base) …We returned to our airplane and
took off for home, I was overwhelmed with what I saw and was very much
impressed with what was going to be one of the largest Air force Bases
in the United States, and just to think I was going to be a part of it,
the 4th one I had the privilege of assisting in activating. I was
thrilled, that night I called my family together and told them what was
about to take place and they all agreed. However, Lela had one
reservation, “What about Camp?” I assured her it would be kept, which
pleased her very much. (She was referring to our Cabin at Camp Alzafar,
near Boerne, Texas, which we had acquired. During the great Depression
beginning in 1929, quite a few were rented from Nobles having a hard
time with their cottage payments , each summer between 1933 to 1941 we
rented cabins for week or two until we bought our own; the children
enjoyed each summer there, Jimmie 7 (Alzafar Past Potentate 1981 Jim
Gullette) and Marion 4, when we started going up there and we have
continued to this day in 1979 and now our grand children (Rick & Janet
Reyes) and great grand children love to go up there (Shawn, Rick III, &
Angela)…

Walter and SX Callaghan were close friends and as the
Chief Civilian Employee at Duncan Field (now known as Kelly AFB) he
assisted greatly in the development of Camp Alzafar. He retired in 1951
and for 60 years, Camp Alzafar was his and Lela's second home.
